Abolitionists were people during the time of the Civil War who wished to abolish slavery. To abolish slavery meant that they would set the slaves free if they got their way.  Abolitionists were against slavery. Many of them lived in the North, a freer land than the South. But there were still some in the South. These people were sometimes violent, and demanding. They kept at their work and didn't stop trying. Abolitionists were people who were part of the movement  to eradicate slavery. Important abolitionists included William Lloyd Garrison, Harriet Beecher Stowe, Fredrick Douglass, Horace Greeley, and John Brown.
