       The Civil War Begin

Kacy

In the Civil war times political parties that opposed slavery were called Republicans.  One of the republicans was Abraham Lincoln, even though he was born in a slave state, Kentucky, (February 12, 1809) he grew up in Illinois, an anti-slave state.

Even though Abraham never went to school because of family finances, he became a lawyer and in 1858 ran for state senate.  He never made it into state senate, but two years later (1860) ran for president in the Republican Party, and even though he was the only candidate opposing slavery, he got elected and served 4 years as our 16th president (1861-1865).

One year before Abraham became president (1860), South Carolina dropped out of the Union (joined the confederacy).  The confederacy ended with 11 states under the rule of Jefferson Davis.  On April 12, 1860, the Confederates attacked Fort Sumter, and the Civil War had begun!
