Division over Slavery
In the late 1850's- early to mid 1860's, the United States of America was no longer a single country. It was two countries, divided over slavery. The United States was mainly Northern States, though it did include California and one or two other Western states. The South had formed a new country, the Confederate States of America, or the Confederacy for short. The U.S. was against slavery, the Confederacy for it. The two presidents of the two countries, Lincoln and Davis, called for army troops and soldiers. The troops soon fought at Fort Sumter, a Union fort in Confederate territory, and Civil War.
Herriet Tubman was one of the most famous black Amercan. She helped free at least 300 slaves she was born in 1820
