In April 1607 three ships arived at Jamestown. They sailed on these ships down the James river, until they got to Jamestown. The three ship's names were Susan Constant, Godspeed and Discovery.Out of the 144 men that came on the four month voyage, only one person died! The 105 men and boys that sailed named Jamestown after thier king, the king of England. They came to America to look for gold. John Smith sometime later noticed that people were so concentrated on finding gold, that they never concentrated on taking care of their crops, farms, and themselves. To solve this problem, John Smith took over and said "He that will not work shall not eat.
The winter of 1609 convinced settlers to abandon their new life in Jamestown. 60 of the 214
settlers made it threw the winter.
Tobacco was Virginias' number 1 cash crop.It saved the settelment, because you can get very rich.

They had barns like these to keep their animals in. As you can see the barns like these are a lot more simple then the ones we have today.If you own horses then we have stables, but back then they didn't have them at all. They just put them in for the night all together then went to bed. they had between 1-2 barns in town. In 1893 Jamestown was owned by the Barney's. The Barneys gave twenty two and a half acres of land including the 1639 church tower.

On April 26, 1607 three ships carrying about 100 english settlers sailed into chose a small spot of land and called it Jamestown.

James 1 had given the Virginia Company of london the right to start a colony. They were not prepared for the rigors of colonial life, and Jamestown almost did not survive.
