The Underground Railroad

The Underground Railroad was not a literal railroad and it is not underground either.  It was a route used for slaves who were trying to escape from slavery to freedom.  The underground railroad route took time to escape from.  The slaves needed help so many white people would use their houses as a place for the slaves to hide out in for at least a day until it was  safe to move on to an other house. The slaves would keep doing this until they reached a free state in the North. Many slaves would use the underground railroad until they reached freedom. The railroad was created to help runaway slaves. The underground was most active in Ohio, Indina, and Pennsylvania.

From 1830 to 1860 the Underground Railroad transported more than 50,000 people to safety!  The Underground Railroud was very useful for the blacks to escape to their freedom. Sometimes when they try to escape things didn't turn out the way they planned. If the slaves were caught they would be killed. The blacks have been suffering through this for a long time.

The Underground Railroad has been in use since 1840. It was very secsesful.
