All 13 colonies had slavery ,but was more common in the South. Some Northern colonies made it illegal to have slavery after the Revolution. Next was the cotton gin, it was invented in 1793 by Eli Whitney. Its job was to make growing and selling easier. By 1860 there were almost 4 million enslaved African Americans in the south. Cotton became the most important crop in the South. The South thought slavery was necessary, but the North thought that it was wrong. In the South, farming was the most important business there was. A difference in the North and South was the North had lots of factories and the South did not. Congress passed tariffs on imported goods, and these goods are called tariffs. They helped factories in the north. Vice president John Calhoun said tariffs were unfair, he also said the constitution did not let the federal government set tariffs. Abraham Lincoln did not like slavery at all. The Underground Railroad was a big thing for slaves so they could escape and go up North where slavery is illegal. Slaves were made to work as miners, carpenters, factory workers, and house servants.
